Do’s & Don’ts Until We Get There:
Do’s

  • Disable power to outlets or any electrical devices in water soaked areas prior to entering the damaged space.  If possible do this at the electrical panel if this area is dry.
  • Wipe water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery with cushions facing zipper down for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil, china saucers, or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn on air conditioning for maximum drying in summer months.   Increase temperature and crack windows to increase humidity release in winter months.
  • Open drawers and cabinet doors for complete drying as possible.
  • Remove valuable paintings and art objects to a dry location.
  • Open suitcases and luggage to dry, in outdoor sunlight if possible.
  • Punch small holes in sagging ceilings to relieve trapped water (don’t forget to place pans beneath!).

Dont’s

  • Don’t enter a wet living space until you have confirmed that no electrical hazards exist.
  • Leave wet fabrics in place; dry as soon as possible. Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at normal room temperature and in ambient humidity levels.
  • Leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors.
  • Use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpet or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
  • Turn off ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet.
  • Don’t track sewer contaminated water into areas that have not been affected.  This will multiply the scope of damage.

Accelerated Drying Systems

Accelerated Drying Systems (ADS) is a method of applying scientifically proven environmental controls and the most technologically advanced drying equipment to dry and restore structures as fast as possible following a flood event or water damage emergency.  ADS has several advantages when utilized on a property that has experienced water damage such as: reduced demolition and replacement of structural components during the drying process. This greatly reduces the amount of time your property is torn up, prevention of mold amplification, and maintains safety and habitability of the property.  ADS has proven to cut overall claim costs by as much as 50%.

How does the Accelerated Drying Process work?

  • Removal of bulk waters
  • Extraction of remaining visible moisture in carpets, hard surface flooring or concrete and furniture items. Installation of high velocity coaxial air moving equipment to force evaporation activity from all affected surfaces.
  • Installation of isolation barriers to concentrate the drying process to the affected areas only.  This minimizes secondary damage from high humidity conditions to areas of the building that were not originally affected.
  • Installation and monitoring of specialty dehumidification equipment to capture and remove damaging latent moisture from the inside environment.
  • Calculate and apply precise Temperature Controls–to speed and expedite the drying process using psychometric principals.
  • Daily monitoring to ensure all systems are working and to measure and balance the drying process.

Crawl Spaces

The majority of homes in Boise, the Treasure Valley, and western Idaho have crawl spaces below them. Crawl spaces are vulnerable to water and bacterial damage because water will always flow to the lowest level.  Broken or ruptured pipes from above including malfunctioning appliances or damaged sewage lines and including ground water make crawl spaces quite susceptible to water damage.   Often times building components such as HVAC ducting, vapor barriers, wall and floor insulation will need to be removed and replaced. In some cases where response to a flooded crawl space has been delayed or postponed, mold and bacterial spores will colonize causing a pungent mal-odor and potential unhealthy living condition for the occupants above.  This is why a timely response from a professional remediation company like Disaster Kleenup is so important.  We gladly work with all insurance carriers.
